I guess between this new recipe for Truffle Hot Chocolate Balls and my Snowman Hot Chocolate Spoons, that I’ve been on a bit of a hot chocolate kick. I figure there’s no better beverage for cold weather than hot chocolate! I was recently sent a couple bottles of Torani Syrups in Pumpkin Pie and Hazelnut flavors and asked to come up with a recipe using them. I’ve, of course, used both flavors to make some awesome flavored coffees, but I wanted to feature something other than the same old same old, so I got to thinking.
I was going to make some ganache to decorate the boyfriend’s birthday cake earlier this week, but he decided he just wanted a plain cake. With ganache on the brain and another influx of cold nights, it dawned on me – why not create a cross between two of my favorite things – chocolate candies and hot chocolate? The idea of Truffle Hot Chocolate Balls was born! They may not be the prettiest thing, and are a bit messy to make, but they make some of the tastiest hot chocolate I’ve ever had and certainly better than the store-bought pre-mixed versions that can have questionable ingredients. The resulting hot chocolate is very chocolatey without being sugary sweet, yet creamy, and just…perfect.
Apologies for the mug looking a bit “rustic”, I just might have taste tested prior to snapping a photo. 😉
As I always encourage with most of my recipes, this is completely customizable to your favorite flavors. Use the type of chocolate you like most (I used 1/3 milk chocolate and 2/3 semi-sweet as I like my hot chocolate just a bit sweet) and certainly whatever flavoring you have a hankering for. Just make sure to use the same amount of chocolate and cream so it comes together correctly. I think in addition to hazelnut and pumpkin, peppermint, almond, coffee or something like rum for the adults would all be delicious. For a more traditional truffle, you can also roll them in things like cocoa, hot chocolate mix, candy pieces, grated chocolate, sprinkles, peppermint pieces, etc – plus it helps them look a bit more pretty for gift giving. 😉
